SWL general coverage receiver with digital display

TenTec 1254 SWL kit

[Specification]  [Reviews]

Building one's own receiver from a kit has launched countless thousands of people into communications careers or the hobbies of amateur radio and short wave listening ("SWLing"). The model 1254 combines the satisfaction of the kit building experience with the performance features expected in a modern HF receiver.

You will build a true dual-conversion superheterodyne with a microprocessor-controlled frequency synthesizer. Alignment is surprisingly easy and does not require complicated test equipment. Building this receiver yourself also gives you the assurance that you can maintain it in perfect working order for years to come. You will build the 1254 in six sections or phases, testing your work after completing each phase. We consider this project to be an intermediate to advanced level building project. If you have never built an electronics kit before, we encourage you to build one of our simpler kits first. Since you are interested in receivers, see our model 1054 or model 1253 regenerative receiver kits.

Estimated build time: 25 hours

Note regarding power supply:
The 1254 receiver kit is supplied with a
110V power supply, this is not suitable for the UK but has been left in the box in case you intend travelling abroad at some point. A 12V DC lead has been supplied with UK stock. The 1254 requires 12 to 14V DC at 250mA minimum, 500mA is recommended. The connector is wired centre positive. An optional power supply is available (PSU8600).

Options:

• PSU8600 optional 12V DC regulated power supply, 3-pin UK style main plug (RF low noise)
• DC8600 optional 12V DC lead fitted with cigar lighter plug
• PHONO-BNC optional aerial adapter, converts a PHONO/RCA plug to a BNC socket
