AR-ONE discriminator / detector output

The FM detector (discriminator) output can be picked up on IC25, pin 10.  This is located on the IF board. Unfortunately it is located on the reverse side of the board (the opposite side to all of the crystal filters). IC25 is located about 1/3 of the way down the board and is labelled 4046. The writing on the IC will be very small but it is the only 4046 IC on the board so don't confuse it with the 4094 and 4053 ICs.

Want wider audio bandwidth...

The widest audio bandwidth is obtainable straight from the FM detector (IC25, pin 10). This will be at quite a low level. If this is not suitable, a good point to take the audio from would be at the output of the mode select IC (IC29, pin 3). At this point, all modes are present and the signal hasn't been altered too much (passed through a 1uf cap). A level of up to 60mV peak to peak should be present here.

If this isn't large enough, then the audio stage will have to be used in some way.

If the wide band audio is to be maintained, the next few stages are best avoided.

   IC18 provides High Pass Filtering.
   IC19 provides Low Pass Filtering.
   IC20 provides De-emphasis.

A level of about 40mV is maintained through this chain.

It may possible to bypass this section completely by feeding the output from the mode select IC (pin 3, IC29) to the input of the volume control IC (pin4, IC26) via a capacitor (1uf).

If this is done, any audio tailoring in the audio pre-amp and audio amp will still be present so a little experimenting with the values around Q5 and IC36 may be necessary. Alternatively just bring out the controlled audio output (IC26, pin6) to a suitable external amplifier.

AR-ONE AGC output

The AGC is fed from the anode of D2 on the IF unit.

This probably isn't the best point to tap into the AGC voltage. It is probably easier to pick it up where it feeds other ICs such as IC1 or IC2 (pin2 in both cases).

These are both located on the upper side of the IF board. Both ICs are AD603 and located adjacent to the two 10.7MA20 crystal filters.

Further UK workshop measurements

The AR-ONE operates from a nominal 12V DC supply. We have today made some bench measurements to address your queries, the receive mode is NFM with receive frequency of 145.2MHz and 8 OHM speaker load.

AR-ONE  Lamp on Lamp off
Switched off 61mA 61mA
Switched on with zero audio 709mA 690mA
Switched on with 3mW audio 709mA 691mA
Switched on with 60mW audio 726mA 707mA

BLACK BOX (no front panel), the radio powers on at very low volume (0.05mW), current is 656mA with receive frequency of 145.2MHz NFM.

The current consumption is a few mA higher in AM receive mode when compared to NFM. The radio typically draws around 709mA @ 145MHz and 754mA @ 2.5GHz, so is receive mode and frequency dependant.

The IF output is configurable between 10.7MHz (2nd IF) and 455kHz (3rd IF) via a menu, output is stated as -20dBm via a BNC rear panel socket. The 10.7MHz selection provides a 10MHz bandwidth (+/- 5MHz).
