General aerial text relevant to the UK - October 2001
Many AOR receivers have a very wide frequency range (AR5000,
AR8600 etc), ideally you would be looking at a minimum of three aerials:
a) Long wire for short wave reception, magnetic long wire baluns are
popular as it is not important to site the receiver directly next to a window as the cable feed is coaxial. Many companies supply such aerials
and as 'kits' with feeder & support wire etc, try:
Haydon Communications
Unit 1, Thurrock Commercial Park

Aveley
Essex RM15 4YA

b) Discone or unipole aerial for general VHF/UHF reception. AOR produce
the DA3000 discone, have a look at:

Many companies produce UNIPOLE wide band aerials, they are typically priced around GBP 40.00, try:
Nevada Communications
Unit 1, Fitzherbert Spur
Farlington

c) Ideally a dedicated aerial for the frequencies of most interest. A few dedicated VHF airband aerials have been produced, try:
Haydon Communications
Unit 1, Thurrock Commercial Park
Purfleet Industrial Estate
London Road
Aveley
Essex RM15 4YA

Also, many SMALL dual band 145/435MHz amateur band colinears provide excellent results for airband, ham band, marine, public service etc. Limit the size to a 5/8th wave on 145MHz with 5/8 + 5/8 on 435MHz (about 4 feet in height), if you select a higher gain physically larger aerial then the workable receive bandwidth will be too narrow for general use and the angle of reception from the horizon will be too low, try:

Purfleet Industrial Estate

Aveley
Essex RM15 4YA

Compromise:
It is possible to select one aerial to DO EVERYTHING but results will not be as good as separate aerials. One such aerial is the SA7000 which
is designed to provide HF/VHF/UHF coverage in a single unobtrusive package:

It may also be worth looking through our standard SELECTING AN AERIAL booklet, it is available from:

When investing in a new aerial, I would recommend using good quality 50 OHM coaxial cable (UR43, UR76, RG58U for small runs and short wave,
UR67, RG213 for longer runs at VHF/UHF). 70 OHM TV coax is not ideal and their plugs / sockets are frankly useless due to high losses of
signal (a good TV signal is considered to be about 1mV, this is about one thousand times larger than a 1uV signal which will produce a good
signal on a typical communication receiver).
The addresses above have been taken from the AOR UK dealer list, most of the dealers on the list should be able to provide a range of suitable aerial systems. We have no special allegiance with those singled out above.
